Oxford is located in western New Haven County, Connecticut. Originally part of Derby, and located at the junction of the Housatonic and Naugatuck rivers, the original town of Derby was settled in 1642 as an Indian trading post under the name Paugussett.The area now known as Oxford consisted mainly of farms, and was established in 1741as a separate Parish, later to become incorporated in 1798.
It seems that one of the pressing reasons to incorporate was the distance to the Derby Meeting house on Sunday.

Oxford belongs to the Naugatuck Valley Economic Development Region. There are several areas in Oxford: Quaker Farms, Riverside and Oxford Center. The town also has the areas finest public golf courses in the area, a Mark Mungeam-designed championship 18 hole course.

very year the town hosts the Oxford Peach Festival. TRIVIA: In 2001, Oxford made headlines around the world when town resident Ottilie Lundgren died of anthrax poisoning.
